ROSEATE SPOONBILL

Your disproportionately gigantic rounded flat beak is delightful,

perhaps even laughable

And your pink plumage makes me think you feed on a diet of shrimp

Have you ever feasted on anemonefish? What about salmon, or the rare

pink handfish?

Maybe you are coated with the lycopenes and anthocyanins found in grapefruit

Or you are pink because you like the way it feels

Pink, the color between a placid slump and a passionate embrace

Is the color of the spoonbill,

Known to prefer the sight of spoons

Impossibly spooning on branches

And contorting its body into the shape of

a spoon

While grazing on some marsh grass and algae

Your mellow bill quietly rattled

And I just had to let out a bellow of laughter

And after I spotted a slight hint of yellow

Your orange eye made me think of oranje tompouce

And your puffy underbelly

Of a puffy downpillow on which to rest

My bulging wide-eyes, and my tired bent neck
